Why I Started Writing
I wasn’t sure about what I should talk about for my first post, so I thought, why not start by sharing why I’ve decided to start writing?
I decided to start writing because I’m not as good at it as I’d like to be. Writing is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and improved through practice. There’s a lot of opportunity to improve your writing especially if you do it with the intention to improve. Each time you write or revise, you can get better at writing simply, briefly, and usefully. 1
Writing is thinking. There are times when we know we understand a concept or an idea yet when we have to explain it to someone else, we can’t. Writing forces you to actually piece words together to turn the idea in your head into something someone other than you can understand. This way, you’ll deepen your understanding of an idea and you might even learn something new.
Immortalization. Putting anything into writing (or any form of media) immortalizes them, more so publishing them. Writing immortalizes our thoughts and emotions, capturing how we feel and think at a specific time. You could probably recall a time when you felt strong emotions but you might not necessarily remember the exact things you thought (or even said) at the time. Writing allows us to capture these things and have something to reflect on.
More than any other reason, I’m writing to share. I’m writing to share my thoughts, ideas, and perspectives. I’ve learned so many valuable lessons that have made a positive impact on my life. I want to share these things hoping that they will help others the way they’ve helped me. On that note, I also find myself repeating the same things and giving the same advice to different people. I’d love to share these things with as many people as I can so why not just write it down once so that same idea can reach more people?
As much as I want to be able to write as clearly and as concisely as I want, I know that it’s a process that I have to go through. I know that during this process of becoming a better writer, my early works, even after edits, might still not meet my standards. Regardless, I’m super excited to go through this learning process. I look forward to writing and revising until I’m confident that I’m able to get the point across as simply and as briefly as possible.
Writing usefully means sharing true important information that people might not know, in a simple and clear way. It involves making strong supported points which makes the writing both accurate and helpful.↩
